      As a result of the pandemic, physical and social isolation and social unrest, all students need ongoing support and quality time from adults to process their feelings, emotions and frustrations and address their fears of future uncertainties as districts reopen their schools. ELs will need words, phrases, sentence frames to help them communicate immediate concerns, stressors, and trauma. They also need language for learning and academic language. If ELs/LTELs/SIFE are to learn 3,000 to 5,000 words per year to keep up with mainstream students, a systematic way to teach words during a virtual or regular classroom lesson is necessary, particularly in the core content areas.

      With this model, teachers with LTELs can accelerate the instructional components of academic vocabulary, discourse, reading comprehension and writing in a learning environment that is safe and engaging while practicing SEL competencies specific to each component.

Sample Schedule:

Session 1: Teaching SEL for Academic Language (3 hours)

Participants will learn and practice integrating SEL competencies into lessons focusing on:

  • The selection of Tier 1, 2 and 3 words/phrases from your texts that undergird mastery of more words
  • Pre-teaching 5 words/phrases in 10 minutes at the beginning of a lesson
  • Using new vocabulary in discourse, verbal and written summarization, and to ensure reading comprehension
  • Showing empathy, compassion, and self-reflection as LTELs work with peers in each activity

Session 2: Teaching SEL for Reading Comprehension (3 hours)

Participants will learn and practice integrating SEL competencies into lessons focusing on:

  • Selecting language, core content, and SEL objectives
  • Building background in 3-minute strategies using text features and text structures
  • Applying SEL competencies that facilitate the proper implementation and benefits of peer reading
  • Using summarization to anchor new vocabulary and reading content
  • Using after-reading activities for closer reading and creative projects

Session 3: Teaching SEL for Writing, Revising and Editing (3 hours)

Participants will learn and practice integrating SEL competencies into lessons focusing on:

  • Drafting techniques that generate more knowledge and creativity
  • Revising strategies
  • Writing powerful conclusions, beginning sentences and awesome titles
  • Editing drafts and final product
  • Applying all techniques to narrative, expository and creative project writing

Session 4: Integrating SEL, Language, Literacy and Content Into Lessons (3 hours)

Participants will learn and practice integrating SEL competencies into lessons focusing on:

  • Review of each component, how to integrate it and time to integrate each
  • Feedback on lessons
  • Reflection and next steps
