Developing Academic Vocabulary
Call for more info: 626-448-244890 minute virtual session
Traditional vocabulary instruction is not enough to help students develop the language necessary for academic success, especially during distance learning. Students need to be able to develop mindsets, routines, and habits that will amplify their language learning as well as leverage their families’ cultural and linguistic capital. In this session, participants engage with effective strategies related to three key concepts: research-based vocabulary instruction, family engagement, and word consciousness.
Learning Outcomes:
- Apply research findings on word learning to vocabulary instruction
- Adapt best practices for vocabulary instruction to distance learning
- Identify opportunities for students to develop academic language at home
- Define word consciousness and promote it in the virtual classroom

Participants in this session explore the concept of word consciousness and practice instructional strategies to promote word consciousness in their students.
Learning Outcomes:
- Define word consciousness
- Use instructional strategies that promote word consciousness to maximize students’ vocabulary development during distance learning
- Provide students with remote learning activities that engage them in word learning with peers, classmates, and family members
- Identify opportunities to connect students’ home and family life with vocabulary development
