It is impossible to focus on dual language goal #3, sociocultural competence, without first allowing students and families to feel valued and supported via sharing of their testimonios. By embracing “testimonios” (testimonies) , a dual language program can ensure that there is a social, political, and emotional impact and importance to the lived experiences of those that are served in the school. Testimonios pave the way for conversations that prepare emergent bilingual students to value one another as they collaboratively work to dismantle the systems of oppression that exist in all U.S. educational systems. Lo Que Se Dice Se Hace is the first title in a series of testimonios that will provide for schools tools to help students develop an awareness and consciousness of the social, emotional, and cultural impact of students learning a second language and the experience and trauma that may entail.
