Have you ever seen two people ride a tandem bicycle? Together they have ups and downs - sometimes they laugh and have fun together, sometimes they feel overwhelmed, sometimes they argue - but they push through and keep going, working together to make it to their destination.

Just like riding a tandem bike, co-teaching in a dual language program (Tandem Teaching) requires a joint commitment to a shared destination - students’ equitable attainment of the three core goals of academic achievement, bilingualism and biliteracy, and sociocultural competence. And, just like riding a tandem bike, Tandem Teaching is rewarding yet challenging, particularly given the lack of guidance to date. Drawing on their shared experience as Tandem Teachers, the authors present research-based strategies and tools to help Tandem Teachers coordinate instruction across languages effectively, efficiently, and equitably. While the book was written with Tandem Teachers in mind, individual teachers who provide instruction through both English and the partner language in self-contained classrooms are likely to find the guidance useful, too!
