As a result of the pandemic, physical and social isolation and social unrest, all students need ongoing support and quality time from adults to process their feelings, emotions and frustrations and address their fears of future uncertainties as districts reopen their schools. ELs will need words, phrases, sentence frames to help them communicate immediate concerns, stressors, and trauma. They also need language for learning and academic language. If ELs/LTELs/SIFE are to learn 3,000 to 5,000 words per year to keep up with mainstream students, a systematic way to teach words during a virtual or regular classroom lesson is necessary, particularly in the core content areas.
With this model, teachers with LTELs can accelerate the instructional components of academic vocabulary, discourse, reading comprehension and writing in a learning environment that is safe and engaging while practicing SEL competencies specific to each component.
