The expansion of Dual Language/Immersion (DL/I) programs over the past ten years across the United States has been exponential in the number of programs; the number of partner languages, including indigenous languages; and K-12 program articulation. That expansion, however, has not always included: collaborative shared ownership/management of programs that reflects the student population or full curriculum spectrum; multiple perspectives as to who could or should have access to these programs; planning for DL/I continuation beyond the elementary years; programs and assessments to ensure marketable partner language proficiencies for students in these programs upon graduation; equitable access to and sustainability of programs.
With input from site, district, university, and national experts, this book is written for those exploring implementation, expanding implementation, or revamping current implementation of dual language/immersion programs. The book will take you through a review of your current context for not only successful implementation with outstanding student outcomes, but also to consider future pivots that may occur due to leadership changes and demographic shifts in the student population being served as well as the community.
